TAKE A BREATHER

Howard Mason, Take a Breather
Oil on canvas, 2024
80 X 95cm

Set among the volunteers at Painswick’s Rococo Garden, Take a Breather captures a scene of quiet social observation. Four standing figures engage in lively conversation, their gestures animated and their attention bound within the group. In contrast, a seated woman in the foreground — cup in hand, gaze directed toward the viewer — occupies a different emotional register. Her expression, contemplative and detached, underscores a sense of quiet solitude amid conviviality. Mason’s composition gently probes the nuances of human connection, exploring how isolation can persist even within community. Rendered with sensitive realism and psychological depth, the painting reflects the artist’s ongoing interest in the subtle tensions between presence and absence, belonging and apartness.
