SAFE PLACE

Howard Mason, Safe Place
Oil on canvas, 2018
100 x 76 cm

In Safe Place, Howard Mason constructs a psychologically charged scene that externalises the inner struggle of containment and release. A woman, caught in a tense, almost balletic pose, attempts to hold shut the drawers of a room overflowing with filing cabinets. Each drawer, labelled with words like “Isolation,” “Relationships,” and “Pensions,” spills fragments of her life — memories, anxieties, and unresolved emotions. Painted in Mason’s distinctive realist style, the work becomes a metaphor for the human tendency to compartmentalise pain, to store away what we can’t yet face. Yet, the act of keeping these drawers closed appears futile; the painting suggests that healing lies not in suppression, but in the willingness to open up, confront, and seek help.

This is contemporary figurative realism, infused with psychological symbolism — a work that balances technical precision with emotional insight, revealing the architecture of the mind as much as the body.
