BIRDMAN

Howard Mason, Bird Man
Oil on canvas
46 X 60 cm

Painted during the lockdown, Bird Man is an introspective self-portrait that reflects the tension of confinement and the fragile desire for freedom. The artist crouches within a compressed, angular space, his body folded tightly as though caught between stillness and flight. The posture, with its hunched back and tilted head, subtly evokes the form of a bird — a creature bound to the ground yet yearning for release. The stark geometry of the setting amplifies the sense of enclosure, while the artist’s upward gaze suggests both vigilance and hope. Through this quietly charged image, Mason transforms the isolation of the pandemic into a meditation on endurance, metamorphosis, and the irrepressible human instinct to transcend constraint.
