Mark Stopforth has exhibited around the UK, most notably several times at the Royal West of England Academy in Bristol, in their Autumn Opens and Drawing Opens and as an invited artist in their Secret Postcard Auctions. He is represented by The Paragon Gallery, Cheltenham, Galerie Rolin, Rouen and The Point Contemporary, Norfolk. His book, Alla Prima Skies and Seas, was published by Crowood Press. He is also a highly rated tutor and has run workshops locally and abroad.
Stopforth works across seascapes, skyscapes, still lifes and studies of nature, exploring the possibilities of paint through layered colour and texture. His work draws on the Romantic and Sublime traditions, expressing a sensitivity to the shifting presence of the natural world and the changing atmosphere within it. He moves between deliberate composition and intuitive decisions, responding to how paint spreads, gathers, and alters the surface. His paintings convey a passion for his art and for the nature of oils and what they can achieve.
