Enzo Marra British, b. 1975
"Finger painting", 2019
oil on canvas
41 x 31 cm
signed and dated verso
By showing the most primal form of mark making, the artist is offering us the opportunity to read the action in different ways. Finger painting being as direct as you can be when applying pigment, something that is considered childish despite how pleasurable the process is. The red hue could easily be paint or something more macabre. This dual identity giving the hand an added potency, playful and immediate, whilst also being slightly worrying.
