Aleph Contemporary presents Congruent Sym, a solo exhibition by Marek Tobolewski, running from 30 May to 28 June. This exhibition continues Tobolewski’s long-standing exploration of symmetry, structure, and fluidity. His work is rooted in freehand drawing, where lines intersect, overlap, and evolve into intricate compositions. Each piece follows a rigorous process, balancing control with the unpredictability of the hand’s movement.

For Tobolewski, symmetry is not a fixed state but a shifting, dynamic system. His paintings and drawings contain central voids that create a sense of movement and disruption within the structured forms. The repetition of lines, layered in precise yet organic patterns, develops over time, each mark influenced by the ones before it. His process involves both planning and intuition, working without masking tape or rigid guides, embracing the risk that each gesture carries.

Over the years, his practice has been shaped by an interest in slow, methodical mark-making. Some works take months to complete, building depth and texture through continuous refinement. Graphite drawings are burnished and reworked, paintings develop through layering and correction. This sustained engagement with the surface gives the work a physical presence, where time and labour remain visible in every detail.

Congruent Sym brings together a selection of recent works that extend this exploration. The compositions remain open-ended, neither fully predictable nor completely random. There is a constant negotiation between precision and variation, between repetition and slight deviation. Each piece connects to his earlier works while introducing new shifts in rhythm and form.

Tobolewski’s approach to symmetry and structure is not about fixed outcomes but about process and adaptation. His work remains in conversation with itself, with past iterations shaping new developments. Congruent Sym reflects this ongoing engagement with form, movement, and the evolving possibilities of balance within a composition.
