SLEEPWALKING: Recent works by Jane Garbett

28 March - 26 April 2025
Jane Garbett’s exhibition, Sleepwalking, reflects her sense of disconnection and helplessness in today’s turbulent world. Despite the weight of global crises, she continues to create, acknowledging the privilege of painting amid uncertainty. Her work does not directly depict these struggles but embodies the tension between chaos and clarity. Sleepwalking invites viewers to embrace both fragility and resilience, finding meaning in her latest abstract works.

Jane Garbett’s forthcoming exhibition, Sleepwalking, is a deeply introspective response to the complexities of our modern world. The title reflects her sense of disconnection and helplessness amidst global challenges, yet it also speaks to her resolve to keep creating. “I feel like I’m sleepwalking,” Garbett explains, describing the overwhelming nature of today’s crises. “There’s so much going on that’s worse than I can ever imagine, and I can’t ignore it. But my work isn’t about that directly—it’s about owning the fact that I’m fortunate to be painting when so much else feels dire.”

In this body of work, Garbett balances the weight of her concerns with the lightness of creation, exploring themes of fragility, resilience, and the tension between chaos and clarity interpreted through the application and juxterposition of colour and form.
