Nigel Noyes: COLOUR WORKS

7 September - 5 October 2024

Nigel Noyes uses painting, print making and photography to explore abstract picture making and colour, with shades lying one next to another in simple shapes, strips and layers. He pays careful attention to the subtle interplay of colour, texture, and form. Each piece he creates is a reflection of his meticulous nature, where nothing is hurried, and every element is considered with care. Whilst he draws from his experiences of the landscape - a stone wall, for example, might reveal to him a perfect equilibrium of shapes and tones - his art is not just a representation of these moments but a dialogue with them, with ‘colour’ and form as the directive forces.

This is painterly, studio based work using oil and acrylics, still life photography of coloured wood blocks and Giclee prints of artworks drawn with virtual brushes and colour palettes.

The prints came about through Noyes’ unusual use of photography to develop his
paintings, playing with ‘virtual’ variants and freeing his working practice to experiment with colours and alternative compositions. This is a ‘fail faster, succeed sooner’ approach that merges creative processes from his background in textile design, photography and painting.

During an enforced period of lockdown, Noyes further extended his work on colour to experiment with offcuts from the construction of his studio. He painted some of the timber and plywood pieces using leftover household paint samples thinking they would help in trialling colour combinations. Inevitably he began photographing the results and these arrangements, though temporary in their physical form, now exist in a state of perpetual balance. They too have become art works in their own right. A selection of these photographs is available in limited editions of 10 and will also appear shortly in a book.

Aleph Contemporary is pleased to present Nigel Noyes’s work in our Stroud Gallery. Running from 7th September to 5th October 2024, the exhibition will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 10 AM to 4 PM, with viewings available by appointment.
