The Art of Sophie Vallance Cantor

Even Tigers Need a Rest — An Online Contemporary Art Exhibition Curated by Jo Baring
Exclusively on view at Aleph Contemporary, this intimate exhibition features eleven paintings by Scottish contemporary artist Sophie Vallance Cantor. Curator Jo Barings’s thoughtful selection showcases Vallance Cantor’s thematic exploration of emotion, playfulness, and fantasy in scenes of bright colour, delightful illustrative animals, figures and scenery. Committed to the fostering and celebration of fine art during the COVID-19 closures, this show is one of an exclusive series of new curated exhibitions organized by London art gallery Aleph Contemporary.

Glasgow based artist Sophie Vallance Cantor is highly regarded for her intriguingly nostalgic approach described by critics as “enigmatic charm”. In this dream-like reverie of an exhibition, viewers find an escape from contemporary life, suddenly immersed in vibrant imaginings of colour and beautiful botanical themes, at play with whimsical jungle and domestic creatures including fantastic tigers and cats. A reflection of experience and imagination, Vallance Cantor’s sources are diverse and range from fine art, literature, music, fashion, patterned tiles, and Japanese cartoons as well as everyday life. The artist describes her journey through artmaking as “an ever changing process that is a reflection of my own movement through life, an exploration, a search for the truth, a conversation with myself, an emotional release, a joke and a manifesto all at once”. Such sentiment has a special resonance in today’s world, and it is a simple yet resplendent joy to explore her work in this virtual online space. Aleph Contemporary is delighted to invite the public to explore this new curated show and experience the heart of an artist’s studio.
