New Work by Contemporary Artist JAKOB STEIGER - 'HOME': A Virtual Online Exhibition at Aleph Contemporary
1st - -14th June, 2020
London art gallery Aleph Contemporary is delighted to feature a virtual online exhibition of new paintings and works on paper by German artist Jakob Steiger.
This curated selection explores the artist's masterly use of mark making, gestural movement, and the juxtaposition of colour with text. Rooted in the calligraphic and abstract beauty of a full yet fragmented approach to line and form, artist Jakob Steiger's exceptional and diverse practice includes painting, collage, drawing, and lightboxes.
In this exclusive show, purely abstract compositions are saturated with expressive colour, paint and gestural form. Still others are poetically inscribed with text, collage and intersections of figurative notations and or geometric form. This open-ended approach reflects the artist's primary inspiration "the interface of philosophy and art."
Indeed, while much of Steiger's work has a haptic beauty and energy, the artist's approach also bears references to specific literary and philosophical texts, artfully embedded within the picture plane. Steiger notes: "For me, a book or an author is like a colour that I can use in a picture. It is the spiritual horizon in which I move and which can be found in the texts." Steigner's influences include the work of Franz Kafka, Janusz Korczak, Walter Benjamin, W.J.T. Mitchell, Theodor Adorno, and Giorgio Agamben among others.
This beautiful collection of striking graphic and painterly works by Jakob Steiger is part of a series of curated online exhibitions organized by Aleph Contemporary. The London art gallery is committed to continuing to showcase important and pioneering artists working today. This spring and summer, we are providing ongoing curated online exhibitions allowing greater access to the world of artist studios, creative process and new art in a time when physical galleries have gone dark.
About Aleph Contemporary
Aleph Contemporary is a London art gallery specialising in emerging and under recognised contemporary art. We foster talent and showcase currents in British and international contemporary art in every genre, with an emphasis on painting.
We have a unique collection available only to our clientele. Vetted and carefully considered, Aleph Contemporary artists have notable records of accomplishment, from educational achievements to special awards, accolades and work in important exhibitions and collections including top museums. As part of the international art community, the gallery promotes a vibrant programme including exhibitions, catalogues, salons, and exclusive interviews on video and podcast. Committed to voices of artists and contemporary practice, we are a hub for intergenerational contemporary art. In addition to select shows and special publications, visit us online and at art fairs in London and abroad.
Synergy between gallery and artist occurs when there is understanding and attention to artists' concerns. How do they see life? How do they relate to our rapidly changing and an often baffling world where divisive thoughts and myriad images overwhelm? How do they perceive and respond to light and dark forces, and make visible the ineffable? Is their visual language mixed with satire or fear? Are they expansive or retiring? Aleph founder Vivienne Roberts cultivates such close relationships with artists, remaining in close communication and making frequent studio visits to see new work and discuss its development.
We are continuing our Support the Artists Support the WHO campaign in May and will be donating 10% of sales to help fight COVID-19.
